Sophie Turner’s Louis Vuitton Met Gala Jumpsuit Featured Nearly 1 Million Sequins

That’s a LOT of sequins

As the biggest night in fashion, the Met Gala certainly provides the perfect opportunity to showcase a lot of, well, fashion. The best designers from all around the world use the gala as an opportunity to showcase their most impressive work. From thousands of feathers to intricate embroidery, there’s no shortage of show-stopping outfits and extraordinary craftsmanship on the red carpet.

For 2019, celebrities Sophie Turner (who is our June cover star), Emma Stone and Chloé Grace Moretz wore custom Louis Vuitton outfits. Designed by Nicolas Ghesquière, each of the women sparkled in variations of shine — Sophie in sequins, Emma in a mosaic and Chloe with mirrors.

Revealing exclusively to marie claire, Louis Vuitton has shared how many sequins it took to get Turner’s final look — 980,000 altogether in two different sizes. Using 17,500 metres of thread and taking 50 hours for the centrepiece design alone, it was certainly a labour of love. Add to that 72 hours of ‘non stop’ embroidery and it definitely qualifies as handmade.

Stone’s metallic jumpsuit look was the result of a new Louis Vuitton-designed machine, which cuts tiny fragments of glass and fixes them to a wool base. After application, the material was heated and the glass melted as to give a ripple effect.

Moretz’s custom tuxedo-style dress was crafted using mosaic techniques, too. After attaching 50 different pieces of mosaic, the dress was then embroidered with a whole host of metallic elements, including silver cabochons and glass beads — taking 200 hours.

Labour of love indeed.
