Stephen King writes horror stories like nobody else. But even his own work out-shadows some of his past creations. In 2002, King released a miniseries about a haunted house called Rose Red that you’ve probably never heard of before, but should definitely watch. Especially if you got hooked on Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House and are looking for a new reason to sleep with the lights on.

Rose Red is a haunted house that since becoming abandoned, mysteriously continues to grow in size. Becoming the centre of psychology professor Dr. Joyce Reardon’s obsession, she takes a group of people with psychic powers and a gifted 15-year-old autistic girl, Annie Wheaton, into the house in an attempt to record data and scientifically prove paranormal phenomena.

The house starts turning on the group and horrifying secrets of the generations who have lived and died there come to the surface.

The cast has a surprisingly large number of familiar faces in it, including Emily Deschanel (Bones), Melanie Lynskey (Castle Rock), Jimmi Simpson (Westworld), Matt Ross (American Horror Story), Matt Keeslar (The Middleman), Nancy Travis (Three Men and a Baby, So I Married an Axe Murderer) and Julian Sands (A Room With a View, Warlock).

One of the actors, David Dukes (Dawson’s Creek), who plays Professor Carl Miller, unexpectedly died while playing tennis on his day off from filming the movie. Since filming of Dukes’ scenes wasn’t complete, director Craig Baxley completed the scenes involving the zombie version of Professor Miller using a model cast of the actor’s face that had been created earlier for makeup and special effects.

Here’s the catch: The four-hour-long series is so underrated it’s surprisingly hard to get your hands on. It was hugely popular when it was first released and came out on a two-disc DVD, but never got released on Blu-ray and is *yet* to make an appearance on any streaming sites. But it’s worth digging around the Internet for if you love old-school horror flicks. And Stephen King.
