It’s time to return to the Upside Down because Stranger Things season 3 is finally upon us – well, almost anyway. The third season of the long-awaited Netflix show, which stars Millie Bobby Brown, Sadie Sink, Winona Ryder, Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton, is about to be released to coincide with the USA’s fourth of July long weekend.

Thankfully, the new season is dropping at the same time worldwide, released at midnight in the USA tonight (don’t worry, we’ve worked out the time it’ll be in Australia below).

Stranger Things Season 2 left off with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) seemingly sealing the gap between the Upside Down and the real world, simultaneously reuniting with her friends Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Will Byers (Noah Schnapp). However, if the above trailer is anything to go by, Season 3’s eight episodes will follow a similar storyline – including more of the monsters and Upside Down.

According to actress Natalia Dyer, who plays Nancy Wheeler, this season is the most explosive yet and is a lot darker than the first two.  “It definitely felt a lot bigger, which I guess is a natural progression in shows like this,” she told Newsweek. I’m personally really excited to see it because I do think it’s gonna be pretty big. “We’re in for a darker season than the first two.”

So what else do we know? Netflix has also released a short teaser in the form of an ad for a new mall in Hawkins, which features Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) working as an ice cream vendor and which also introduces a new character to the series, Robin (Maya Thurman-Hawke), who is set to uncover a “dark secret” in Hawkins, Indiana.

But Robin isn’t the only newbie in town. Actors Jake Busey and Cary Elwes have also been added to the show as new characters, Bruce and Mayor Kline and Francesca Reale will feature as Heather, a lifeguard at the community pool who, according to a Netflix release, becomes the focal point of a “dark mystery”.

We also know that Lucas’ little sister Erica, played by Priah Ferguson, is set to play a much bigger role this season.
