Sydney Couple Face Court For Feeding Malnourished Baby A Vegan Diet

Their 20-month-old daughter was hospitalised suffering seizures

A couple from the eastern suburbs of Sydney faced court yesterday, after their 20-month-old daughter was found to be severely malnourished and suffering rickets.

The 31-year-old woman and 33-year-old man pleaded not guilty to charges of reckless grievous bodily harm and failing to provide for a child, causing danger of serious injury, smh.com.au reports.

The baby was brought to the attention of police after she was admitted to Sydney Children’s Hospital suffering a seizure on March 10.

“Police will allege in court the girl’s parents fed the child a strict diet, which was severely deficient in nutrients for her to thrive,” the NSW Police statement reads.

News.com.au reports the baby girl was acutely deficient in vitamin D, vitamin B12, zinc and iron. Police report her parents, both vegans themselves, kept the child on a vegan diet.

Hospital staff said her weight and height were both considerably below what they should be.

The parents are on bail until they face Waverley Local Court again on May 30.
