My tea is a mug of warmth and joy that soothes my soul. I love all tea, from the traditional earl grey to the herbal lemongrass and ginger, all the way down to the jazzy peach, papaya, apple and roasted chicory combo.
I thought I knew all there was to know about my beloved drink...but oh boy was I wrong.
The Sydney Tea Festival introduced me to the more obscure side of tea, and I'm pleased to say I made some delicious and unusual new discoveries.
Here are three new things I learnt about tea:
1. Chocolate Tea
It exists and I love it.
I’m not exaggerating when I say my life changed a little when I tried the Coconut Cacao Tea Blend from The Husk Mill. The tea doesn’t taste like watery chocolate as I was expecting, but a creamy not too sweet dark chocolate (with just the tiniest hint of coconut) in liquid form. It's delicious, the perfect winter night time brew, and also packed with antioxidants.
2. Tea Lattes
Once upon a time tea came in a bag and it was placed in hot water. But the good folks at The Rabbit Hole opened my eyes to tea mixers; a thick liquid that has been brewed from real tea and turned into a concentrate. These tea mixers can create tea lattes by pouring the concentrate into warm milk. I tried their Turkish Delight tea latte and it was an utterly divine treat.
3. Tea cocktails
Tea and alcohol was something I was unsure mixed well, but I am must say I have officially been converted. The gin masters at Archie Rose Distilling Co confirmed that us tea lovers can be indulged by a naughtier side of our beloved tea.
It looks like tea has gotten a face-lift, and I like it.
