The Crown’s Casting Director On Who You’ll See In Season 3

So. Much. Intel

Ever since news broke that Olivia Colman will replace Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth on The Crown, we’ve been anxiously awaiting more information. So far, the producers have kept quiet on the recasting of the remaining roles – although Vanessa Kirby may have let slip that Helena Bonham Carter is our next Princess Margaret.

But now, The Crown’s casting director, Nina Gold, has let slip a few juicy details to Vanity Fair. “As we get closer to the present day, many of these people are very much alive,” she says of the difficulty in casting season three. “So we have to honour them by picking the right actor to play them – while making a link between the actors who played these characters in the first seasons.”

Gold is currently casting for a 1970s-era Prince Charles, Princess Anne and Camilla Shand (as she was known before her first marriage). What she’s looking for? “New or newish talent.”

“We’re unlikely to cast a major movie star,” she tells Vanity Fair. “When we cast Claire and Vanessa, they had done loads of really good work, but they weren’t very well-known to this kind of worldwide audience – which was great, because they totally owned the characters without too much baggage.”

With Paul Bettany recently bowing out of replacing Matt Smith as Prince Philip, we’d hazard a guess that they’ll continue to stick with proven British talents. Fingers crossed we find out soon!
