Everything We Know (So Far) About The Tantalising ‘Sopranos’ Prequel Film, ‘The Many Saints Of Newark’

The origins of the legacy, Tony Soprano.

The Sopranos remains one of the greatest series in television of all time—and even if you’ve never watched it (we recommend rectifying this immediately if yes), you’ll no doubt have heard of the name Tony Soprano.

That’s why after 14 long years since the fateful series finale aired, the show’s legion of fans were overjoyed to learn that another instalment was in production—The Many Saints Of Newark.

Interestingly, this version of events (which will form a feature-length film) will cover main character and mafia boss Tony Soprano’s earlier days, a time before he was one of the head honchos in New Jersey’s gangster scene.

The most exciting part about the new movie? It’s written by David Chase and Lawrence Konner—the very same names who wrote the iconic TV series.

Better still, playing a young Tony Soprano is the great James Gandolfini’s son, Michael Gandolfini. Tony himself played the main role in the television series—so the new film is staying very much within the family.

What is the plot of The Many Saints Of Newark?

The new film will be based on the young Tony Soprano’s life, revealing how he rose the ranks to become the mafia boss in his New Jersey-based crew.

Based in Newark, Tony is challenged by the powerful DiMeo crime family as they take hold over the increasingly race-torn city.

Per Warner Bros., another key character is Tony’s uncle he idolises, Dickie Moltisanti.

Dickie “struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities,” and has an influence over his nephew that will “help make the impressionable teenager into the all-powerful mob boss” that we later come to know as Tony Soprano.

Who is in the cast of The Many Saints Of Newark?

The film stars the late James Gandolfini’s son, Michael Gandolfini as the young Tony Soprano. We’ll also get a small taste of James himself, with archived recordings of his voice used in the film’s narration.

Alessandro Nivola will play Dickie Moltisanti, while Corey Stoll will play Corrado “Junior” Soprano Jr.

John Magaro will play a younger Silvio Dante, while Jon Bernthal plays Giovanni “Johnny Boy” Soprano.

When will The Many Saints Of Newark be released?

The film is expected to hit theatres in Australia on November 4.

While the world premiere actually occurred earlier in September, its release date was postponed (like many other films) due to the COVID-19 outbreak. That said, expect plenty of information about the film to spill over the coming weeks in the lead-up to its release in November.
