Style Coach: Meet Fashion’s New Rules

Rule number one? Authenticity is key.

We’ve all heard those fashion dos and don’ts – the rules that seemingly tell us what we can wear, and when and how we can wear it.

Thankfully, these days we’re all a little bit savvier when it comes to our style and understand that the only thing that really matters when it comes to fashion is feeling good for ourselves.

So, we’re taking these ‘new rules’ into the new year and dressing for authenticity over attempting to fit in.

Know what works

Every body is different, so it makes sense that not every trend, style, shape or colour will work for everyone. The key is finding what works for you and running with it.

Have sky-high legs but struggle with shape? Rock those skinny jeans and a pair of stilettos and create shape with shirts or belts that cinch at the waist.

Not a fan of bright colours? Wear shades inspired by nature, like neutral brown, cream or shades of black.

Having a signature colour or shape is something that will make you feel comfortable every day and make you feel like your most fashionable self.

Restyle and re-wear

One scroll through social media will have you believing you have to wear something new every time you step out of the house.

Not only does that dwindle the bank balance, but it often means we’re purchasing ‘fast’ fashion, made to be disposed of instead of kept forever.

Don’t be afraid to wear the same outfit twice — a long-sleeved collared shirt can become a dress in the warmer months, or a cocktail dress can be dressed down with sneakers or sandals for a casual brunch.

Use accessories to differentiate between looks — the Coach Pillow Tabby Shoulder Bag in Ivory is versatile enough for a night out on the town, or a casual weekday breakfast meeting. It’s all about how you mix and match.

Invest in quality

Of course, clothes and accessories are more likely to last if you buy the best. But that doesn’t necessarily mean purchasing the most expensive option.

Buy products from brands – like Coach – you know are made to last, with a focus on timeless craftsmanship. It’s also important to be aware of the conditions your items are made in – sustainably made or sourced materials are better for everyone, and the environment.

Buying products with longevity in mind means they can be worn time and time again and may even become a vintage piece passed down through generations.

Have fun with it

The number one rule when it comes to dressing for yourself? Wear what makes you happy.

After all, at the end of the day, fashion should be fun. You’re the only person who has to wear what you choose, so as long as you are comfortable, and feel like you’re the most ‘you’ in whatever you’re wearing, that’s all that matters.

Celebrate your uniqueness through your styling – whether that be with a quirky print, an unexpected pair of shoes or a handbag (or two!) draped cross-body.

Mix and match with accessories and styles from different parts of the world or different eras. It may take some experimenting to get it 100 per cent right, but eventually you’ll find a style you can call your very own.

And you may just start a new trend while you’re at it.
