4 Powerhouse Creative Women On How They Redefined Individuality In 2021

These four made the most of the wildest of years. Consider us inspired.

For many, 2021 looked a little different than what we’d imagined.

But while there may have been less of the stuff that we normally associate with joy and creativity (like spending time with friends and community or being able to explore our world) there was more time to experiment and focus on what we really loved.

And that’s exactly what these creators did.

marie claire caught up with four inspiring voices who managed to make the most of the wildest of years when it comes to their style and creativity – and we’re taking the lessons they learned on board.

The Fearless Fashionista – Lu Leauanae

Coach Lu Leauanae
Lu wears Coach Soft Tabby Shoulder Bag in Canyon Multi, $725; Disney x Coach Ski Mickey Mouse Sweater, $725; Trompe Loeil Skirt, $650; all from coachaustralia.com.

As a manager and social influencer at Coach, Lu knows a thing or two about fashion and style – sharing her passion with her followers on Instagram. Despite lockdowns keeping her separated from the world, her social space has allowed her to express herself online.

When it comes to your style, what are your core values?

“My values have been shaped by some incredible women in my life – my nan, mum, sister, cousin and friends.  These women have encouraged me to be creative with my fashion or inspired certain elements of my style.

“My core value style-wise is to never be afraid to be individual.”

What are some things everyone should know about curating an individual look?

“Don’t hesitate to experiment and lead the way with fashion in fear of being criticised by others. People may judge you for something you wear now, but they will be wearing it a year later.”

What’s your advice for anyone looking to venture into the creative space?

“Just go for it! A simple and cost-effective way to start is by making an Instagram page to document your work and progression.  Chances are you already have a uniqueness and creativity about you – now you just need to share it with the world!”

What started as a personal dream to show love to those around her through art has become a new career path for artist and illustrator Josline Mutombo. After pursuing a corporate career, Jos now aims to create simple and beautiful art that delights all those who receive it.

What is a new way you’ve found to express your creativity this year?

“I challenged myself in a major way this year by submitting an oil portrait to the Archibald Prize. This would be my first ever oil painting, a medium I have always found quite intimidating.

“It would also be my first time entering this prestigious competition, just with the goals of learning new skills and showing my art to more than just my incredibly supportive friends and family.”

What made you joyful this year?

“Moving to a new city has been so exciting and filled me with more joy than I had anticipated. Whether in art or life, being agile and malleable made me so joyful in 2021.”

What’s your advice for anyone looking to venture into the creative space?

“Create a dedicated workspace where you can feel motivated and inspired.

“A network is also essential, so find a clan of creatives who are not like you.”

Timeless Style – Clarissa ‘CC’ Coyne

Coach Clarissa ‘CC’ Coyne
CC wears Soft Tabby Shoulder Bag in Black, $725 ; Coach Long Party Dress, $1,495; all from coachaustralia.com.

The Coach senior store manager has a knack for finding timeless pieces that work for any style and occasion – and shares her tips on her Instagram page.

Her simple rules for an authentic style? Be you, whatever that looks like.

When it comes to your style, what are your core values?

“Be confident in what you are wearing and own it! Never shrink away from your personality or taste. Always present the real you.

“Wear classic colours influenced by those found in nature. And when you find a piece that works for you, buy multiples! You don’t want that regret if you miss out.”

What are some things everyone should know about curating an individual look?

“It takes time. When I was younger, I was influenced by the current fashion of the day. Now, I find I am just updating pieces when they are worn out or tired.

“I search for inspiration in magazines and online and take screenshots of things I like.”

What’s your advice for anyone looking to venture into the creative space?

“Let your own personality shine through and try and express that through your styling – celebrate your uniqueness!

“And network! Take the time to get to know and connect with people – the best opportunities have come out of connections that I have made throughout my life.”

For freelance stylist Fiona Gould, 2021 was a year of new beginnings which saw her welcoming a baby boy and launching her own furniture line. And the future is looking even brighter.

When it comes to your style, what are your core values?

“Simplicity, quality and timelessness, delivered in a laid-back way.”

What are some things everyone should know about curating an individual look?

“Use a moodboard to keep yourself on track, be confident with your choices and be brave. Also, it’s important to remember it’s ok to be inspired by various trends or designers, but you should always look to carve out your own signature spin.”

What’s your advice for anyone looking to venture into the creative space?

“Don’t compare yourself to other people’s successes and just start. It’s not until you really get stuck in and put yourself out there that you begin to learn, evolve, meet others in your industry, find your niche and properly hone your skill.”
