It has been revealed that Sarah Jessica Parker’s character, Carrie Bradshaw was never meant to wear a tulle skirt or get splashed on by a bus as she struts down the streets of New York city.
Sex And The City‘s original opening credits have been unearthed by Entertainment Weekly, the show’s creator Darren Star told the publication about Carrie’s unseen blue dress.
“There were two wardrobes. One was the tutu, and we did one pass where Sarah Jessica was wearing a blue dress and didn’t get splashed; instead, she trips when she sees the ad.”
The series’ costume designer Patricia Field famously found the iconic skirt in a sales bin for $5. “It was very difficult for the producers to understand the tutu,” recalls the Australian-born stylist. “Sarah Jessica and I were fighting for it, and Darren said, ‘OK, but I want other outfits as possibilities.’”
“It was such a brilliant choice because, in a way, Carrie’s dancing through her life in New York,” Star says. Looking back, Star can’t imagine a tutu-less Carrie—and neither can we!
