The dark musical comedy was created by Ryan Murphy, the creator of Glee and American Horror Story, and tells the story of Payton Hobart, a wealthy student at Saint Sebastian High School in Santa Barbara, California, who is convinced from a young age that he'll become President of the United States. In order to make that dream a reality, Hobart has to navigate the treacherous political landscape of his high school, attempt to become student body president - all the while keeping his clean image and own morality intact (while also dealing with his ruthless classmates).
The series is a dark comedy and satirical, offering up a fascinating look at the trials and tribulations that go into becoming a politician. And like we already knew, it's no singular path.
Pitch Perfect's Ben Platt, who most recently starred in Broadway's Dear Evan Hansen, will play the lead role of Hobart alongside his co-stars Lucy Boynton and Gwyneth Paltrow. Zoey Deutch, Laura Dreyfuss, Theo Germaine, Rahne Jones, Julia Schlaepfer, Benjamin Barrett, David Corenswet, Jessica Lange and Bob Balaban will also be starring in the upcoming series. Glee's Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk will write and executive produce the series alongside Murphy.
We can expect a lot more from Murphy on Netflix in the coming years, having been poached by the streaming service from 21st Century Fox in an alleged $300 million deal. At the Time 100 Summit in April, the American screenwriter, director and producer announced he has 10 projects in the works at the streaming service: three documentaries, four TV shows and three movies.
This series already has a predicted premiere date (September 27) but a trailer is yet to be released.
