Nicole Kidman will play Broadway actress Angie Dickinson (Angie Schworer on-stage), while James Corden has been cast as Dee Dee's self-obsessed and out-and-proud Broadway star friend Barry Glickman, played by Brooks Ashmanskas on-stage.
Other cast members include Awkwafina, Andrew Rannells as Trent Oliver and Keegan-Michael Key.
The show follows a group of New York Broadway stars as they arrive in the fictional town of Edgewater in Indiana to help Emma go to her high school's prom after she's been banned from taking a girl as her date. It's reported that Murphy will begin directing the film in December, which is set for a 2020 release.
The Prom, an original concept by Jack Viertel, has been a fan favourite this season on Broadway. It received six Tony Award nominations. The Prom features music by Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Chad Beguelin, and a book by Bob Martin. The film adaptation is also being done by the musicals' original creators.
This is also not Murphy's only project in motion with the streaming service. The creator of tv shows Glee and American Horror Story is also currently working on The Politician, a highly anticipated series starring Gwyneth Paltrow. Murphy is also involved in several other projects yet to be announced.
