This year has been an undeniably huge one for the royals, with Kate Middleton expected to give birth to her third child any day now, and Meghan Markle set to walk down the aisle next month.
And now, yet another piece of royal news has landed.

Appearing at the opening of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in London, Queen Elizabeth II said she hoped Prince Charles will succeed her as the head of the Commonwealth.

The Royal Family rarely every makes comments about the future beyond the Queen’s reign.

“It is my sincere wish that the Commonwealth will continue to offer stability and continuity for future generations, and will decide that one day The Prince of Wales should carry on the important work started by my father in 1949,“ the Queen said at the summit, Vanity Fair reports.

“By continuing to treasure and reinvigorate our associations and activities, I believe we will secure a safer, more prosperous and sustainable world for those who follow us: a world where the Commonwealth’s generosity of spirit can bring its gentle touch of healing and hope to all.”

The role as head of the Commonwealth is not hereditary and leaders are expected to vote on Friday.

The Queen’s public appearance was just days before her 92 birthday; a special concert will be held in her honour over the weekend.

So seems that Prince Charles will likely wear the crown one day after all.
