Ever since its inception in 2019, Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy has had sci-fi superhero fans in a glorified chokehold. The release of season three was unsurprisingly big. So big, in fact, that it temporarily knocked Stranger Things from its number one spot on the streaming platform in the US for a week in June 2022, as reported byThe Hollywood Reporter.
But what makes it so good? The suspense-filled action scenes certainly play a part, but then there’s also the softer plots around love and friendships. Essentially, it’s the perfect mix of drama, action and feel-good moments, and understandably, people want more.
Ever since season three came to an end (and with a major cliff-hanger at that), fans have been curious as to what season four will entail.
The wait is almost over, with The Umbrella Academy Season 4 officially released on Netflix on 8 August 2024. But until then, here’s everything we know (so far) about the upcoming final season.
When was the fourth season of The Umbrella Academy announced?
On 24 August 2022, Netflix announced that The Umbrella Academy would be back for a fourth (and final!) season.
In the announcement, the streaming platform also conformed that showrunner and creator Steve Blackman has also extended his creative partnership with Netflix. Next on his list? A series based on the global interactive gaming phenomenon Horizon Zero Dawn, as well as an original concept series called Orbital. He’s got a busy few years ahead of him, it seems.
But even before the announcement, Blackman was open about his plans for The Umbrella Academy. In June 2022, he told The Wrap he had already pitched the plot of Umbrella Academy season four to Netflix.
“I know the beginning middle and end, I know where we’re going to. Since I started Umbrella, I only knew in my head what I thought the first four seasons are,” he explained, adding that he had “no idea” where he would go beyond a fourth season.
What will happen in Umbrella Academy season four?
As the final season of Umbrella Academy, it’s likely season four will wrap up some storylines and plots from previous seasons.
Top of mind for fans will be the potentially game changing cliff-hanger at the end of season three, when the siblings entered a new universe.
Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), who slaughtered Reginald (Colm Feore) in order to hit the reset button, was reunited with her husband and daughter. Meanwhile Viktor (Elliot Page), Diego (David Castañeda), Lila (Ritu Arya), Five (Aidan Gallagher), Ben (Justin H. Min) and Klaus (Robert Sheehan) were also still alive, but the Hotel Oblivion no longer existed. Their powers were also stripped, including Five’s ability to blink through space and time.
At the very end, Luther (Tom Hopper) leaves to search for the missing Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez), and the others also disperse.
In season four, we can expect to see the siblings at some point in the future, perhaps separated and living their own lives. However, we have no doubt the new instalment will see them team up once again.
Netflix has even released a short video with the cast, which hints at what could be in store for the upcoming season.
“[It’s] really, really packed with the classic Umbrella Academy family nonsense and shenanigans that you look forward to,” Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison Hargreeves) says in the video.
“We hit the ground running pretty quickly [and] put the siblings through the usual amount of mayhem,” adds Tom Hopper (Luther Hargreeves).
When will season four be released?
Netflix will release The Umbrella Academy season four globally on 8 August 2024.
This is over a year after cast and crew filmed the final season, with production running between February and May 2023. According to a report from Netflix publication Tudum, showrunner Steve Blackman said “the steaks have never been greater” for the siblings. He also teased that the final season will explore one of the biggest mysteries from the graphic novels that inspired the series. “I don’t want to say what it is, but the fans will probably figure it out.”
Who will be cast in season four?
Elliot Page (Viktor), Tom Hopper (Luther), Robert Sheehan (Klaus), David Castañeda (Diego), Aidan Gallagher (Five), Ritu Arya (Lila), Justin H. Min (Ben), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison) and Colm Feore (Reginald) are all confirmed as returning cast for The Umbrella Academy season four.
New cast members include Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally and David Cross. As reported by industry publication Deadline in 2023, real-life couple Offerman and Mullally will play Drs Gene and Jean Thibedeau, while Cross plays business- and family-man Sy Grossman.
