Remember when you were told that no one cares about high school once you’ve left high school? Well, that pretty much rang true up until this week when dating app Toffee launched in Australia.
The app, which matches people from “similar backgrounds” has just one one caveat: you can’t join unless you went to a private school.
Users are asked to verify their high school from a list of options, which according to the Sydney Morning Herald, biazaarly includes a boat shed belonging to Shore School in Sydney. Only after you have proven you went to a private school can you use the app — because heaven forbid any publicly schooled people should get past the login page.
Toffee has been active in the United Kingdom since last year, when founder Lydia Davis set it up to ensure like minded singles were landing their perfect (private school-educated) match.
“We set it up because we know people from similar backgrounds are more likely to stick together,” Davis says on the app’s website. “Toffee connects the right people to help them find their match with our sophisticated matching algorithm taking care of all your dating homework.”
“In the UK, eight per cent of people are privately educated but in Australia that number is around 35 per cent,” Davis told 9Honey.
So, if you’d like to find a partner who can’t stop thinking about their high school days, then sure, Toffee might be the place for you. The rest of us will stick with Bumble.
