A woman who went missing in Kansas City back in January has been found dead.
Police have confirmed Toni Anderson, 20, was found in her vehicle which had been submerged for weeks after it is believed she accidentally drove into the water soon after going missing on Jan. 15.
A police spokeswoman has told People that there is nothing to suggest foul play but declined to discuss the case in detail, citing an ongoing investigation.
“I am relieved that it was nothing more than a tragic accident,” her mother Liz Anderson tells People.
“There was no foul play; [Toni] had no broken bones, and there was nothing on her body that would indicate any type of a struggle,” she says. “It is horrible. But they finally found her, and now we have a bit of closure.”
On the evening of her disappearance, after finishing her shift at the Chrome Strip Club, Ms Anderson was pulled over by police for a routine traffic violation. She then reportedly sent a friend a text message before disappearing without a trace.
“She stated to the officer that she was almost out of gas. There’s a QuikTrip real close,” officer Darin Snapp said in a statement.
“So the officer just told her, you know, ‘there’s a gas station right there,’ gave her a warning for the violation, and watched her actually go to the QuikTrip and that’s the last we have seen of her.”
Fox4KC reports that there were two attempts to use Ms Anderson’s credit card at the QuikTrip station.
After being pulled over, Ms Anderson reportedly sent a text message to her friend Roxanne Townsend which read: “OMG just just (sic) pulled over again.”
“It was exactly 4:42 when she texted me and said, “I just got pulled over again.” Said Ms Townsend back in January, according to The Mirror. “She said ‘again’ because she gets pulled over all the time.”
“We’ve spoken with family members, friends and co-workers but unfortunately still no sign of Toni’s whereabouts,” added Snapp in January. “There is no evidence of foul play, but her disappearance is very concerning.”
Family and friends remembered her as a “beautiful” and “cheerful” woman during a public memorial.
“We were going to take over the world,” boyfriend Pete Sanchez told hundreds of her friends in church according to The Kansas City Star. “And we wanted nothing more than to see each other every day.”
