Demi Moore Says Her Mother “Sold” Her To Her Rapist

It's part of her new memoir, 'Inside Out'

This article deals with distressing content, including rape and substance abuse.

Demi Moore sat down with Good Morning America’s Diane Sawyer to talk about her upcoming memoir, Inside Out. The actress decided to not just recount the good times throughout her life, but also give a raw and incredibly honest recount of the heartbreaking times that she’s gone through too.

The new memoir delves into Moore’s horrifying rape, which she had only discussed briefly in the months prior to discussing her book in depth. The GMA segment with Sawyer included more details and explained Moore’s complicated relationship with her mother, Virginia King.

Moore recounted the rape, saying that she came home to an older man that she knew. After he raped her, he asked, “How does it feel to be whored by your mother for 500 dollars?” Sawyer asked Moore if she thought that really was the case and she said that it wasn’t that simple. Moore said that when she was just a teenager, her mother would take her out to bars so that she’d get attention from male patrons, so their dynamic wasn’t exactly conventional.

“In my deep heart, no, I don’t think it was a straightforward transaction,” Moore said of the man’s accusation. “But she still did give him the access and put me in harm’s way.”

Moore added that her relationship with her mother didn’t just involve picking up men, but incidents where she would save her mother’s life after she attempted suicide. Moore eventually decided to sever ties with her mother. The two managed to reconcile before her mother’s death in 1998, though Moore says that having to pull pills out of her mother’s mouth at age 12 basically ended her childhood.

“[It was] a life-changing moment,” Moore told Sawyer.

Moore has also revealed details about her marriage to Ashton Kutcher, saying that during their eight-year relationship, from 2003 to 2011, she suffered a miscarriage and that Kutcher cheated on her.

In an interview ahead of the release of Inside Out for the New York Times, Moore writes that the pair’s 15-year age difference made her feel like she was time travelling, saying their relationship was “a do-over, like I could just go back in time and experience what it was like to be young, with him—much more so than I’d ever been able to experience it when I was actually in my twenties.”

Moore reveals that soon after starting to date Kutcher, she became pregnant with a girl, who she planned to name Chaplin Ray, however, six months into the pregnancy, she lost the child – something she blames of her drinking. Moore says her drinking worsened in the years following her wedding to Kutcher in 2005 and that she started abusing Vicodin, before finding out that Kutcher had cheated on her.
