The family of British police officer PC Keith Palmer who was killed in the Westminster terror attack last week have thanked the people who tried to save him.
In a statement released by Scotland Yard, the family said: “There was nothing more you could have done.”
The 48-year-old was stabbed to death while he was on duty by Khalid Masood who also killed three other people in the attack.
PC Palmer’s relatives said they were “overwhelmed” by the support they had received and the “kindness and generosity” of those who had reached out to them.
They added, “We would also like to express our gratitude to the people who were with Keith in his last moments and who were working that day… You did your best and we are just grateful he was not alone.”
British Foreign Affairs Minister Tobias Ellwood, who was one of the people who tried to help PC Palmer, said he was “heartbroken” that he was unable to save the life of the police office, according to The Telegraph UK.
After running toward gunfire to get to PC Palmer, Ellwood was photographed giving him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and trying to stem the bleeding.
Ellwood, who has ben hailed a hero for his actions, told the Sunday Express, “The story is not about me. He was the hero, not me. I don’t deserve the praise because I couldn’t save him.”
The Palmer family also thanked the police force for their support during this difficult time, “It has made us realise what a caring, strong and supportive family Keith was part of during his career with the police. We can’t thank them enough.”
They added, “We care about him being remembered for his selfless bravery and loving nature. We miss him so much, but we are also incredibly proud of Keith.”
