The Manus Island detention centre will close it has been announced. The decision came Immigration Minister Peter Dutton met with Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister Peter O’Neill today.

The fate of the 854 men currently being held in the detention centre remains unclear, as does the time frame for the facility’s closure.
In a statement Prime Minister O’Neill said “Both Papua New Guinea and Australia are in agreement that the centre is to be closed.”
In April the PNG Supreme Court ruled that detention centre was “illegal and unconstitutional”.
