The study, undertaken by researchers at the University of Guelph and the Sex Information and Education Council of Canada (SIECCAN) looked at 2,400 people between the ages of 40 and 59 and surveyed their frequency, satisfaction and willingness to experiment.

75% of those surveyed had had a sexual encounter in the last 12 months, while 71% had in the last six, and 63% said they were ‘more interested’ in trying new things.

Two thirds of the participants described themselves as ‘happy’ or ‘very happy’ with their sex lives.

UK dating site Illicit Encounters conducted a study of 828 subjects in 2015 which The study found that 37% of women and 34% of men revealed that the best age to have sex is in your 40s.

“20-year-olds are having plenty of sex, but the 40-year-olds are actually enjoying it,” said a spokesperson from the site.

One of the main reasons experts believe sex gets better is that as we grow older, we grow more confident in ourselves and what we do – and don’t – want between the sheets.

“40-year-olds have fewer hang-ups than 20-year-olds, and more experience under their wing – they really know what they want out of their intimate life – and that’s great sex!”
