The wife of Khalid Masood, the man responsible for the attack on Westminster, has spoken out about the events, saying she ‘totally condemns his actions’.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports Rohey Hydara released a statement via the Press Association, speaking out about the attack which left four people dead and 50 more injured.
“I am saddened and shocked by what Khalid has done. I totally condemn his actions,” she said. “I express my condolences to the families of the victims that have died, and wish a speedy recovery to all the injured.
“I would like to request privacy for our family, especially our children, at this difficult time,” she said.
The attack occurred last week when a car travelling across Westminster Bridge drove into a crowd of people before smashing into the gates of Parliament. Khalid Masood then got out of the vehicle before stabbing a police officer with a knife. Police open fired at Masood, and he later died from the injuries.
The Telegraph reports Hydara has been linked to Masood at three addresses since 2010, and was told that he was going to Saudi Arabia before the attack occurred.
She was one of the 12 people who were arrested as possible links to the attack, but she was released and completely cleared of any involvement.
Police currently believe that Masood carried out the attack alone, however are still looking into possible connections.
Neil Basu, Senior National Coordinator for UK Counter Terrorism Policing, has said that they have not found any link to ISIS.
“Whilst I have found no evidence of an association with IS or al-Qaeda, there is clearly an interest in Jihad,” Mr Basu said.
“His attack method appears to be based on low sophistication, low tech, low cost techniques copied from other attacks, and echo the rhetoric of IS leaders in terms of methodology and attacking police and civilians, but at this stage I have no evidence he discussed this with others,” he added.
Masood was born in Kent under the name Adrian Russell Ajao, later changing his name to Khalid Masood in 2005.
