Valentine’s Day has come around once again (surely, it’s not February already) and the battle of deciding on the perfect way to celebrate or protest the day is upon us.
Whether you’re head over heels in love, still waiting for your Prince Charming to swoop you off your feet, or disgusted at the idea of said Prince Charming, we agree there’s no better way to spend the 14th of February than with a killer rom-com (and a block of chocolate… or two).
With a movie for everyone and every type of relationship, Galentine's Day converts included, below find the films worth watching for every mood - whether you're loved up or have just been unceremoniously dumped.
If you’ve just been dumped, watch this:
The First Wives Club
This film, starring film legends Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton, is proof that it’s never too late to get together with your girlfriends and seek completely necessary revenge on the men in your life who have taken you for granted.
John Tucker Must Die
An iconic film of the early 2000s, John Tucker Must Die follows the take-down of a serial-cheater by his three girlfriends. What a jerk, right? Plus, even though we totally hate him, we can’t help but admit that Jesse Metcalfe is a total babe in this film.
Eat Pray Love
If you’re in need of a complete soul cleansing experience, look no further than Julia Roberts film Eat Pray Love, based on the novel (and true story) by Elizabeth Gilbert. Filled with self-discovery and self-healing, this film will inspire you to turn your pain into passion.
Elle Woods is perhaps the most inspiring film character of our generation (and with good reason). Proving that no man or stereotype can stop her from succeeding (what, like it's hard?). This is the perfect movie to watch if you want to laugh and cry all in one.
If you’re doing long distance, watch this:
The Great Gatsby
An all-time classic love story written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, recreated for the big screen and staring the always dazzling Leonardo Dicaprio is a true testament to what some people will do for love when separated by distance.
Is it possible to watch this film without crying? The answer is definitely no. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams prove that no amount of years apart can take away from true love. Insert ugly crying face.
Looks like there might be a bit of a Nicholas Sparks’ theme going on here. Need we say more? All we can say is once you watch this movie, it’ll definitely be in your top movies of all time.
Sleepless in Seattle
A movie that will definitely make you believe in fate, Sleepless in Seattle follows a traditional love story between recent widower Sam and hopeless romantic Annie as they navigate the challenges of long distance.
If it’s just you and your girlfriends, watch this:
My Best Friend's Wedding
My Best Friend’s Wedding is the classic story of childhood friendship flourishing into true love. Accompanied by an iconic mid-movie sing-along, bring out the wine and the cheese platter for a girl’s night classic with a star-studded cast.
A classic chick-flick with the perfect ending, Pretty Woman will make you dream of a love like Vivian and Edward’s.
Guaranteed to make you cry and scream with laughter, Bridesmaids is a definite must to add to your Valentine’s Day movie marathon.
If you’re Bridget Jones-wine-and-pyjamas level of single, watch this:
P.S I Love You
If you haven’t watched P.S I Love You, we suggest you get into your pj’s, cuddle up with a box of tissues and get prepared to cry it out. A movie not to miss if you’re trying to believe in love again.
The Wedding Singer
Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore; the perfect rom-com partnership. The Wedding Singer is set in the elaborate and over the top '80s era, where perms were in and Boy George was king! A great watch if you need a laugh this Valentine's season. The fashion and one-liners will have you in stitches.
If you’re loved up, watch this:
A must-see for all loved up couples, Notting Hill follows the unlikely meeting of bookstore owner William Thacker and famous American actress Anna Scott. Will love triumph as the two struggle to reconcile their completely different lifestyles?
The perfect Christmas and Valentine’s Day film, accompanied by a killer cast and some excellent singing and dancing scenes, Love Actually is perfect in more ways than one. With something for everyone, this is a movie that both you and your significant other can enjoy together, regardless of how many times you've forced them to watch it in the past.
