The Ginger & Smart Designers On The Trends We’ll Be Wearing Next Season

And what to expect from their VAMFF show

As Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival‘s (VAMFF) 2018 Grand Showcase designer, Ginger & Smart is set to show its Autumn Winter 2018 collection on Thursday 8 March 2018 in a spectacular runway show.

The iconic Australian label continues VAMFF’s annual tradition of highlighting one of the country’s most notable designers – previous years have seen Dion Lee, Camilla & Marc and Camilla debut their new collections in the stunning Royal Exhibition Building.

Ahead of the show, we sat down with Ginger & Smart designers Alexandra and Genevieve to chat all things fashion and what we can expect come March 8th.

How does it feel to be VAMFF’s 2018 Grand Showcase designer?

It is an honour to be asked to be Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival’s 2018 Grand Showcase designer, and we are looking forward to presenting an exciting show that celebrates the diversity of our collection.

What can people expect from the show?

Beautiful colour, luminous prints, custom 3d fabrications, luxe accessories and some unexpected moments.

What trends do you think Australians will be wearing this winter?

We are seeing women embrace beautiful colour for autumn/winter, from deep plums and marigold to rich greens and reds.

Where did you find inspiration for your latest collection?

The Ginger & Smart AW 18 collection is inspired by altered states of reality. Augmented reality is a rapidly emerging technology that blurs the line between what’s real or computer generated by enhancing what we see and feel. We were drawn to this composite view of the world and wanted to explore this, connection between realities. This collection explores the tension between future and nature and the magic created by the balance of these contrasts.

What are your three favourite pieces from the new range and why?

We love the Materialise double-breasted suit for its androgynous feel, great for work or with a heel for evening. A favourite party dress is the deep green fringe dress… it’s dangerously fun. The Utopia wrap dress is a graphic futurist floral in rich colours on a ginger base that we wear for slinky evening wear with a dark plum lip or over jeans as a kimono robe on the weekends.
