While all eyes were on Nicola Peltz’s custom couture Maison Valentino column dress at her wedding to Brooklyn Beckham, mother-of-the-groom Victoria Beckham was making a silent case for best dressed of the evening.
At first glance, you may think the bias cut, bardot style silver slip dress was another run of the mill prêt-à-porter design from VB’s eponymous label.
The satin, gun-metal grey number infuses traditional codes of womenswear with a sophisticated and sensual edge—everything the Victoria Beckham line has become synonymous for.
If we saw this on the shop floor at Victoria’s Dover Street boutique, we would have had this dress rung up in an instant.
However, the fashion designer has taken to social media to explain the secret meanings behind the dress along with the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it details hidden in the gown. Honestly, the dress was every bit as posh as we expected it to be.
Not only was the wedding a first of many for the Beckham family—the first of four children to walk down the aisle being the most important—it was also a pivotal moment in Victoria’s career as a designer.
Posting a series of mirror selfies in her draping slip, Victoria captioned the Instagram stories “a special dress for a special day, the first Victoria Beckham couture dress made in our London atelier.”
While we’re unsure if we’ll be seeing a full haute-couture collection from the quintessentially British brand, we know that this gown has set a new precedent for mother-of-the-groom dresses around the world. We’re just wondering how to get our hands on one ourselves.
Featuring an asymmetrical train, plunging neckline and intricate embroidery detail, Victoria referred to the creation of this dress as a “labour of love”.
“The bespoke fabric was developed by one of my favourite mills in Italy, it’s like liquid metal and hangs so beautifully,” the former pop star continued.
The real standout of the dress was the ornate lace detailing that falls along the bodice. As Victoria explains, the trompe l’oeil detail is actually “three different styles, placed to create a new lace and then hand embroidered”.
“The dress took five days to create by six of my incredibly talented London atelier team. I’m so grateful to my incredible team for creating something so beautiful for me,” the designer wrote.
It seems that the Victoria Beckham team was also kept busy in the lead up to the wedding, with Victoria’s mum Jackie Adams and Romeo’s girlfriend Mia Regan also donning custom designs for the occasion.
Brooklyn chose to pay homage to his British heritage by working with preeminent London-born designer Kim Jones. With Jones helming Dior’s menswear line, it was a natural fit to combine codes of French couture with traditional British tailoring.
As for the bride, she worked with her stylist Leslie Fremar and Valentino creative director Maison Valentino to create her wedding dress. Our highlight? Nicola’s satin Valentino platform pumps.
Despite the ceremony being over, we have a feeling that this uber stylish family has many more wedding looks up our sleeves. Oh, the anticipation.
