Victoria Records One Of The Highest COVID Days Since The Start Of The Pandemic

The state has recorded a huge spike with over 70 cases

Victoria has recorded the highest day of COVID-19 cases in almost three months with a huge spike of over 70 cases. Victoria’s Health Minister Jenny Mikakos and Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton confirmed 75 cases were recorded in the past 24 hours.

Mikakos said one new case was linked to hotel quarantine, 14 were linked to outbreaks, 37 have been detected through routine testing and 23 are still under investigation.

“We have six new cases believed to be community transmission, taking that to a total of 271, and there are currently 288 active cases in Victoria,” she said.

Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton described the jump as “absolutely concerning” and warned it would get “worse before it gets better.”

“It’s clearly concerning, today are very big numbers,” he said this week. “Changing the law is something we’ll have to consider because we have to do whatever it takes to change this situation around.”

Sutton added that younger people were making up a greater proportion of the total number of cases.

“They need to understand the message, they can’t dismiss it that they might have a milder illness. Everyone has parents and grandparents and the most vulnerable will die,” he said.

The total number of cases in Victoria since the pandemic began now stands at 2,099, per ABC News.
