Shanina Shaik Says The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Has Been Cancelled

The Australian model just dropped a bombshell

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show may have been an annual event since 1995, but it appears the runway extravaganza won’t be going ahead this year. After it was revealed that the show has been dropped from US network television in May, Australian model and Victoria’s Secret veteran Shanina Shaik claims the 2019 show has been cancelled.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, the 28-year-old model said, “Unfortunately the Victoria’s Secret show won’t be happening this year. It’s something that I’m not used to because every year around this time I’m training like an angel.”

However, Shaik doesn’t think this is the end of the lingerie label’s legacy: “I’m sure in the future something will happen, which I’m pretty sure about. I’m sure they’re trying to work on branding and new ways to do the show because it’s the best show in the world.”

Shaik first walked for Victoria’s Secret in 2011 and has featured in the show a total of five times – 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2018. Speaking to marie claire Australia ahead of last year’s show in New York, the Melbourne-born model revealed she exercises twice a day in the lead up to the event, which includes dance cardio and Pilates. “A lot of pilates works right for my body. I like to work with Megan Roup, she does a lot of dance cardio and Pilates-based work, using small weights and ankle weights. I like to do a lot of infrared saunas as well, Shape House is one of my favourites, it’s just really good for water retention and inflammation,” she said.

While Victoria’s Secret hasn’t yet confirmed the cancellation, the news comes after a tumultuous year for the brand with many saying it refuses to change with the times and calling for the lingerie giant to include more body diversity in its line-up of models. And then, of course, Chief marketing officer, Ed Razek’s comments about transgender models which quickly went viral and prompted celebrities such as Halsey, who performed in the 2018 show, to speak out.

While addressing the criticism surrounding Victoria’s Secret’s lack of diversity, Razek told Vogue, “It’s like, why doesn’t your show do this? Shouldn’t you have transsexuals in the show? No. No, I don’t think we should. Well, why not? Because the show is a fantasy. It’s a 42-minute entertainment special. That’s what it is. It is the only one of its kind in the world, and any other fashion brand in the world would take it in a minute, including the competitors that are carping at us. And they carp at us because we’re the leader.”
