Viola Davis’s Grammy award win has earned her the elite EGOT status.
The highly coveted title is only given to those who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award.
The actress won the final piece in her EGOT puzzle at the 65th Grammy Awards for the audio recording of her memoir, Finding Me.
Davis already holds an Emmy for her role in the TV Series How To Get Away With Murder, an Academy Award for her role in the 2016 film Fences, and two Tony awards for Fences and King Hedley II.
Davis’ win makes her the 18th person in history to achieve the elite title, joining the ranks of Rita Moreno, Audrey Hepburn, Helen Hayes, John Gielgud, Mel Brooks, John Legend and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The actress is only the third Black woman to earn the title, alongside Jennifer Hudson and Whoopie Goldberg.
Davis’s Grammy nomination saw her go up against Lin-Manuel Miranda (Aristotle and Dante Dive Into the Waters of the World), Questlove (Music Is History), Jamie Foxx (Act Like You Got Some Sense) and Mel Brooks (All About Me! My Remarkable Life In Show Business By Mel Brooks).
In her Grammy acceptance speech, Davis shared her excitement over achieving the title, telling the audience, “I just EGOT.”
The actress also shared the inspiration behind her memoir, stating, “I wrote this book to honour the six-year-old Viola. To honour her life, her joy, her trauma, everything.”
