West Virginia Mayor Beverly Whaling resigned late Tuesday afternoon after there was public outrage when she responded to a Facebook post calling Michelle Obama an 'ape in heels'.
ABC News reports that the initial post, by Pamela Ramsey Taylor, which has since been deleted, read: "It will be so refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady back in the White House. I'm tired of seeing a Ape in heels"
Beverly Whaling then responded to the post by commenting, "Just made my day Pam".
Pamela Ramsey Taylor, who is a director at Clay County Development Corp, was put on leave for her post.
Ms Whaling released a public apology to the media, attempting to clarify that her comment was not intended to agree with the racist part of the post.
"I was referring to my day being made for change in the White House! I am truly sorry for any hard feelings this may have caused! Those who know me know that I'm not in any way racist!"
Both the post and the comment prompted calls from the public for both women to be fired from their jobs.
