Spring Racing Fashion Tips To Ensure You Look The Part

The ultimate style checklist

Spring racing season is underway and though we’d like to pretend we’re focused on the track, the truth is we’re far more preoccupied with the fashion on the field – and, more specifically, what exactly to wear to this year’s events.

For those who haven’t attended the racing carnival before, there are a few fashion rules guests adhere to. Namely, avoiding anything too short, tight or revealing (think classic and classy), and wearing some form of headwear, be it a hat, fascinator or other decoration.

If you’re stuck for inspiration, take a look at how the style set has won the (fashion) cup in previous years.

1. Experiment with something other than a dress

A jumpsuit or full-fledged power suit will give you a point of difference while still adhering to the dress code.

2. Focus on the accessories

Keep your dress simple and instead opt for eye-catching accessories, such as statement earrings or a wide-brimmed hat.

3. Switch the fascinator for a headband or hair clips for an effortless look

You won’t have to worry about taking someone’s eye out this way, either.

4. Don’t be afraid of colour or texture

Florals, pastels, lace and bright hues – if ever there was an occasion to step outside of your comfort zone, this is it.

5. Wear heels you’ll be able to walk in all day

Sandals, open-toe heels, wedges and even flats are acceptable during the racing carnival, but keep in mind you’re likely to be walking over grass so if you opt for extra height, try a thicker heel or something with an ankle strap for extra support.

6. If in doubt, keep it simple

You can’t go wrong with loose waves, a LBD (if you ensure it’s daytime appropriate) and a chic bag (extra points if it’s Chloé, a la Natalie Roser.)
