The 5 Winter Hair Trends You’re About To See Everywhere

Chop to it!

The bitter reality set in over the weekend, for anyone living in Sydney at least: the cold weather has finally hit. But it’s not just our wardrobes that are in need of a hasty update: as we bring out our coats and cashmere for another year, it’s also time to hit refresh on our hair.

Below, we’ve quizzed the experts on the defining hair trends of the new season, from cut to colour to the products you’ll need.

1/ The forecast is bright

The weather may be dull, but our hair definitely won’t be: “From the catwalk, we’re seeing punchy artificial colours,” says Angela Blunt of Barney Martin. “Translating for everyday wear, we see this as chalky pastel blossom tones, true rose, brulee and bluebell in soft, multi-coloured highlights.” Think Hailey Baldwin’s new pink-tinged tips, which she debuted at the Met Gala.

Award-winning hairstylist and Dyson Supersonic hair dryer ambassador Peter Thomsen of Chelsea Haircutters agrees. “We’re going to see a lot of brights as people go for peaches, light pinks and the really beautiful apricot colours as a contrast to winter,” he says.

2/ Short hair is here to stay

“Long hair is really taking a backseat right now,” says Valonz owner and Dyson Supersonic hair dryer ambassador Renya Xydis. In its place? Lobs, bobs and shoulder-length cuts. “We’re seeing women take a lot of length off in salon,” says Thomsen. “Women with very long hair are going straight to the lob and even to a chin-length bob, with lots of texture.” Stuck for inspo? 3/ It’s all about that ‘70s look

‘70s-inspired style is back in a big way – but with a modern edge. “Think the evolution of ‘70s classics modernized for today,” says Angela. That translates to curtain fringes, heavy layering and shag cuts. “I think a piecey, textured curtain fringe is going to be the biggest trend of winter 2018,” says Renya. “It’s low-maintenance, easy to style and versatile to wear – you can wear it separated in the middle or worn to the side.”

As for your cut: “Think a sexy shag cut with reversible layers,” says Renya. “Start by layering from the cheekbone down – it’s important there’s a beautiful curve in the hair, which helps with the overall shag look. If the cut is correct, the look can be taken from a sleek blow dry to a curly shag.” Renya recommends the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer for drying and styling without heat damage.

4/ The return of the topknot

After seasons of liberally spritzing with salt spray for matte texture and grit, shiny hair is making a comeback. But before that sends your inner lazy girl into a tailspin, take note: this season, smooth hair doesn’t equate to hours of styling. Instead, swap your usual messy bun for a “slicked-back topknot,” guides Renya. “It’s a more polished look and it’s perfect for hiding a bad hair day,” she says, adding, “We’ll also see a resurgence of smooth waves this winter.” Start nourishing hair with a conditioning oil before you blow-dry to encourage natural shine.
