Tributes have poured in for talented South Australian footballer Ellen Maple, who tragically lost her life in a car crash on Sunday night.
The 22-year-old footballer died when her call collided with a pole in Glengowrie in south-west Adelaide at about 10pm, Nine News reports.
Sturt Football Club has paid tribute Maple, who joined the club after previously playing for Norwood. In a statement, the club said it was “saddened by the tragic death of one of our inaugural senior women’s players”.
“Ellen, a determined, skilful midfielder will be remembered as the first person to kick a goal in the SANFL women’s competition,” the statement continued.
“One of the competition’s leading possession players, Ellen was named in our best players in seven of her eight games.
“Our thoughts are with Ellen’s family and friends including players and officials of both our Club, Norwood and Mt Lofty football clubs.”
Just hours before the crash, Elen had 19 touches in a South Australian National Football League Women’s game, Adelaide Now reports.
“SANFL is deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Sturt Football Club senior women’s player Ellen Maple,” SANFL CEO Jake Parkinson said.
“We send our heartfelt condolences and offer comfort and support to Ellen’s family and friends, the players, coaches and staff of the Sturt, Norwood and Mt Lofty football clubs and everyone affected by this devastating news.”
After Sunday’s horror crash, nearby residents rushed to the wreckage to help save Ellen. Attempts to revive the 22-year-old by paramedics were sadly unsuccessful.
Ellen has a twin sister, Tess, who is also a talented footballer.
