Two of Malcolm Turnbull’s senior frontbenchers – Julie Bishop and Scott Morrison – have refused to reveal how they would vote in a plebiscite on same-sex marriage.
Both ministers attempted the dodge the issue in separate interviews.
Treasurer Scott Morrison appeared on ABC’s 7.30 on Tuesday night and refused to answer the question six times. Instead, Morrison said he would respect the outcome of the national vote.
“I will respect the outcome of the plebiscite. If it passes then the legislation will pass,” Morrison said.
Foreign Minister and deputy Liberal leader Julie Bishop echoed Morrison’s response during an interview with Lateline. She said that the issue was ‘hypothetical’ and that she would wait until she saw the legislation.
“What we have said is we will have a plebiscite so everybody in Australia can have their say and I support that and I think it is a good idea,” Bishop said.
In contrast, the Opposition have pledged to introduce same-sex marriage legislation into Parliament within 100 days of a Labor government.
