Is Gatsby Glamour Getting A Revival? Why 1920s Makeup Is Trending

One century apart, timing is everything.

Our wardrobes may be living in the Y2K era right now with the return of low-rise jeans and micro miniskirts, but our makeup bags are headed right for the roaring ‘20s.

At least that’s what TikTok is telling us, with 1920s makeup currently trending on the platform at over 34 million views and climbing.

While much of what we’ve seen on the platform so far have been literal recreations of prominent looks from the era, a much more interpretive undercurrent has been slowly surfacing in mainstream beauty.

Zendaya made a case for a more permanent return of the finger wave with her November InStyle cover, a style also spotted in Pat McGrath’s Bridgerton collaboration which oozed of Gatsby-esque glamour.

Then, there are more subtle signs of the ‘20s growing influence in Fenty’s recent campaign showcasing pencil thin brows, and vampy looks seen in Rihanna’s statement lip at the 2021 Met Gala or Julia Fox’s jet-black graphic eyes at haute couture week.

The parallels between the 1920s, a time when inhibitions were loosened and a party lifestyle embraced, and the 2020s, emerging from lockdown ready to make up for two lost years, also play into the revival of these striking statement looks.

If ever there were a time to get expressive and embrace the glamour of the Gatsby era, it’s now.

While there’s thankfully no need to go shaving your eyebrows off for an authentic look, putting your own spin on the ‘20s style is shaping up to be a prominent trend to try, starting with the below essential beauty buys.
