Activism On The Oscars Red Carpet

The biggest statements on the red carpet were nothing to do with fashion

While at first our eyes were drawn to Ruth Negga’s red Valentino gown on the Oscars red carpet, we couldn’t help but notice she accessorised with a blue ribbon.

Karlie Kloss also pinned a blue ribbon to her white Stella McCartney gown and Moana star Lin Manuel Miranda and his date, his mother, were also rocking blue ribbons.

At the after party it was Best Actress winner Emma Stone.

So what do they mean?

The ribbons are in support of the American Civil Liberties Union as part of their new “Stand with ACLU” initiative.

Nominees, presenters, musicians and guests are encouraged to wear the ribbon to show their support “for the rights and civil liberties guaranteed by the Constitution to everyone in the United States,” according to a statement obtained by People

The organisation has worked for nearly 100 years to defend and protect individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and law of the United States.

Support for ACLU has been growing since President Trump introduced his controversial immigration ban, with stars supporting the initiative throughout awards season.

At the SAG awards actress Sarah Paulson used her acceptance speech to encourage viewers to donate.

Memberships for the organisation have doubled in the last three months.

“We have been incredibly heartened by the outpouring of support for the ACLU from the entertainment community at large as we band together to protect and defend the rights and civil liberties guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution for everyone in this country,” said Michele Moore, ACLU chief communications officer, in a statement.

But conscious that on a night when all eyes would be on her, it wasn’t just the ACLU that Emma Stone threw her support behind, donning a small, gold Planned Parenthood pin on the left side of her gold Givenchy gown.

Dakota Johnson also wore the Planned Parenthood pin, attached to her clutch.

While last Year’s Best Actress winner Brie Larson threw her support by ACLU, Planned Parenthood and GLAAD.
