Kate Spade’s husband, Andy Spade, has written a lengthy statement addressing his wife’s passing.
The statement, published in full by The New York Times, addresses the rumours surrounding his marriage, his relationship with Kate and her struggle with her mental health.
“Kate was the most beautiful woman in the world,” he begins. “She was the kindest person I’ve ever known and my best friend for 35 years.”
“My daughter and I are devastated by her loss, and can’t even begin to fathom life without her. We are deeply heartbroken and miss her already.”
Spade goes on to explain that his wife suffered from depression and anxiety for years. “She was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives,” he writes, adding that there were no warning signs of what she was about to do.
He also opens up about their marriage, revealing they had been living separately for the past 10 months, but continued to share family meals and holidays.
“Our daughter was our priority. We were not legally separated and never even discussed divorce,” he explains. “We were best friends trying to work through our problems in the best way we knew how.”
He ends with a plea for privacy for the sake of his daughter.
