Must watch: the chilling trailer for Sofia Coppola’s new film

Starring Elle Fanning, Kirsten Dunst, Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell

If you loved The Virgin Suicides (not to mention Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette), prepare yourselves: Sofia Coppola is back with another gripping tale of seduction.

The trailer for her first film since 2013’s The Bling Ring has just been released – and it’s spine-tinglingly good.

Coppola is adapting 1971 thriller The Beguiled, which takes place in 19th century Virginia during the Civil War.

Colin Farrell stars as a wounded Union solider found in the woods nearby an isolated girls’ boarding school. Nicole Kidman plays Martha Farnsworth, the school headmistress.

Kirsten Dunst plays a teacher and Elle Fanning her pupil. Both Dunst and Fanning have worked with Coppola before – Dunst in The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette and Fanning in Somewhere.

The 1971 version starred Clint Eastwood as the soldier and the film centred on his perspective. Coppola, however, has her lens fixed squarely on the women.

“The main crux of the story is about the dynamics between a group of women all stuck together, and also the power shifts between men and women,” Coppola told Entertainment Weekly. “So for me, it’s very universal, but it’s in this exotic setting of the Southern gentility.”

The Beguiled is based on the 1966 novel A Painted Devil by Thomas P. Cullinan.
