Sex And The City Producer Reveals The Real Story Behind Mr. Big’s Name

Big and Carrie forever

If you’re a ride or die Sex and the City fan, you’ll agree that one of the best ever moments came when they announced Mr. Big’s real name in the 2004 series finale.

In the last scene, when Carrie Bradshaw’s on and off love interest, Mr. Big, rang her bedazzled flip-phone, it was revealed his name was actually John Preston – essentially closing the book on the mystery that was Chris Noth’s famous character.

As a moment that has gone down as one of the best in the series, we were shocked to learn that the now-famous scene almost didn’t happen.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the show’s executive producer Michael Patrick King revealed it was a spare of the moment decision:

“In the last episode, in the last moment, I realised [I had] to say Mr. Big’s name and I just [mimes typing on a keyboard] ‘John,’” King said.

“And then I told all the writers and they were like, ‘What the hell?’ And I was like, ‘We have to say this name because now he’s real!’”

Admittedly, however, he didn’t always know Mr. Big’s name was John.

“In my mind? He had no name,” explained King. “It was just one of those things where it’s like, ‘Oh, it’s happening right now’ and you didn’t plan it.”

And why John? you ask. Well, apparently Mr. Big deserved “the most generic, American, almost pilgrim name.”

King also described what it was like to have created a character as iconic as Bradshaw, who was a true metaphor for the modern-age woman of the time. “She was good and bad; noble and a failure; nice and selfish.” he said.

Sounds like Carrie to us.
