Why Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Water Gel Is the Moisturiser I Keep Returning To

Your new cult-favourite staple

There are certain things in my beauty cabinet that I happily invest in. A beautifully blended foundation that doubles as skincare, a perfume that makes me feel expensive, a brow gel that won’t budge during an afternoon Pilates class. But when it comes to moisturiser – the humble, twice-a-day essential – I’m surprisingly frugal. I’ve tried the best. And yet, the one jar I always come back to is a quiet achiever: Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Water Gel

While it may not come with a designer price tag or reside in a frosted glass jar with gold foil, this water gel hybrid does precisely what it says on the jar – and then some. For dry-skinned girls like myself (the kind who are perpetually chasing that dewy, post-facial glow), it’s nothing short of a revelation.

What Makes It So Good? Let Me Count the Ways

At first swipe, you’ll notice the texture: cooling, jelly-like, almost pudding-y. It glides over the skin like silk pyjamas and sinks in instantly, leaving not a hint of grease – just the kind of plumped, glassy finish usually reserved for editorial shoots or Korean skincare commercials. The star of the show? Hyaluronic acid. The Water Gel delivers a hefty dose of it, drawing moisture into the skin and holding it there like a sponge. I’ve found it particularly useful under makeup -the perfect canvas for a sheer skin tint or even nothing at all.

Then there’s the packaging. No-nonsense, yes, but delightfully chic in its own quiet way. The transparent blue pot reminds me of a Balearic holiday – cool, clean, and completely unfussy. It also lets you see exactly how much product is left, which (in a household with multiple users and a small child who thinks moisturiser is finger paint) is more helpful than you’d think.

And let’s not forget the most important factor: it works. Whether I’m navigating the recycled air of the office or braving the elements during a windswept school run, my skin feels hydrated and comfortable. It doesn’t flake, it doesn’t tighten, and it doesn’t scream out for another layer. In short, it delivers, consistently.

A Formula That Plays Well With Everyone

The brilliance of the Hydro Boost Water Gel is in its universality. It’s fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and suitable for all skin types. My best friend, who’s acne-prone and suspicious of anything even remotely rich, uses it post-retinol without a single breakout.

It’s also worth noting that the Hydro Boost range now comes in a few different formulations: a nourishing cream, a thicker Hyaluronic Acid Night Cream, and this, the Water Gel (formulated with extra-dry skin in mind). I stick firmly with the latter. Not only because my skin laps it up, but because it’s as versatile as it is dependable.

The Verdict? Don’t Let the Price Fool You

At $38, Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Water Gel is cheaper than most gels. But it behaves like a product ten times the price. It hydrates, soothes, layers, and primes. It’s my go-to on no-makeup days and my secret weapon beneath foundation. Most importantly, it’s the one cream I’ll actually finish, and – perhaps more telling – I’ve repurchased multiple times.

In a world where skincare is increasingly expensive and complicated, there’s something comforting about a product that simply does its job – and does it beautifully.
