Nail Your Blonde This Summer

We ask celebrity colourist Tracey Cunningham how you can go lighter, no matter what your natural shade is

Beverley Hills-based celebrity colourist and Olaplex Ambassador Tracey Cunningham (she’s on the speed dial of celebs like Charlize Theron, JLo, Jessica Biel and Drew Barrymore) tells how to get your best beachy blonde this season.

What is the trend for blonde hair right now?

“As we are on the heels of summertime, my girls want what they want every summer season and that is sun-kissed, sexy highlighted hair with a few lowlights put in for texture. Recreating a Californian sun-kissed blonde – you can’t beat that!”

Even brunettes are able to go blonde these days. How is this now possible when once it wasn’t?

“I have one word for that – Olaplex!” Olaplex has recently launched innovative No.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner each to restore, repair and hydrate hair without excess weight.

How many shades lighter can brunettes realistically go?

“It all depends on the head of hair I’m working with. Anything’s possible. You can absolutely go from brunette to platinum however you must prep prior to really get your hair in its prime condition. The transformation doesn’t happen with one salon visit. You have to allocate time and a budget for this – it usually takes about two to three salon visits to reach your final desired perfect colour. With Olaplex, we can now truly get these desired transformations without the expected breakage.”

How can we get our hair lightened with minimal damage?

“Prep. Use Olaplex. Allocate time. Go to a professional!

What is the major issue associated with going blonde? And how can we prevent it?

“Breakage. I suggest getting a great trim before a drastic colour change. At home, wash hair using a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner like Olaplex’s new No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner – a new favourite! Breakage can be repaired by using Olaplex treatments two times a week to maintain and gain bond strength.

What are some ways to keep processed hair nourished and strong?

“Less shampooing if possible… If you have to shampoo, please use a non-sulphate shampoo as this will help soften the hair and not strip it of its colour. Again, treat your hair at home using Olaplex Hair Perfector No.3 to rebuild the bonds and get your hair strong and vivacious again. I highly recommend in salon treatments too, but every morning before you get in the shower spread about a 20 cent sized amount of Olaplex No.3 all over your hair – leave in for an hour then shower out – you’ll start to see your healthy hair coming back again. It’s a no-brainer.”
