The One Skincare Step Salma Hayek Says Is A Waste Of Time

And the skin-loving ritual she does instead

It’s as polarising a beauty question as they come: should you or shouldn’t you cleanse your face in the morning?

For actress Salma Hayek, the answer is a straight no. “I never cleanse my skin in the morning,” she recently told The New York Times. “My grandmother taught me that at night your skin replenishes all the things you lost during the day. Also, if I cleanse very well at night, why would it be dirty when I wake up? It’s for companies to have you use more products.”

Instead, Hayek simply spritzes rosewater on her face before applying moisturiser. “It’s so gentle and wakes the skin up,” she says.

Rosewater reappears in her evening skincare routine. “At night I take off my make-up with coconut oil, then I use rosewater to take off the residuals,” Hayek explains. “You can use a hot towel with the rosewater – you put a wet towel in the microwave – to do a little steam.”

Completely natural, anti-inflammatory and gently hydrating, rosewater’s skin-saving properties have been beloved for centuries. Try the Akhal Organic Rose Hydrosol, $20, distilled from hand-picked Rosa Damascena petals in Morocco.
