Is Skin Cycling over?

With the rise of social media trends, we’ve seen skincare go from being an inconsistent chore to a nightly non-negotiable. The ‘clean girl’ aesthetic had people leaning heavily towards a pared-back beauty routine, focusing on potent active-packed formulas to deliver dewy, fresh skin.

But with this newfound skin confidence, many were unknowingly compromising their skin’s moisture barrier, by ‘cannonballing’ their skin – in other words, incorporating too many harsh products too quickly.

Many went in search of a gentler routine that wasn’t going to irritate their skin but would still have them seeing results. First, we saw the rise of the efficacious skin cycling routine, and then as we became more invested in multi-beneficial products, we saw multi-tasking must-haves take over.

What Is ‘Skin Cycling’?

This massively popular way to apply your skincare is the practice of alternating between active ingredients in your skincare routine, moving between exfoliants, actives and a hydrating gentle recovery day. The practice ensures that your skin is getting everything it needs, by maximising the effects of each product while also aiming to reduce any potential irritations.

The derm-founded routine started as a four-day cycle. But since its meteoric rise in popularity, thanks to Beauty Tok, skincare devotees have understandably taken matters into their own hands with how they cycle through their products. The three key ingredients that are kept separate include:

Vitamin C

Known for its brilliant brightening power, vitamin C is best used in the morning to fight free radical damage. But when combined with other ingredients it can become unstable and significantly less effective.

Retinol

This potent powerhouse ingredient should be used with caution. Retinol works to increase skin cell turnover and renew the skin. But when combined with other active ingredients, the combination can strip your skin’s natural oils.

AHAs/BHAs

These incredible exfoliants are wonderful for sloughing away dead skin and buildup on your skin, but when paired with anything active, their reaction can be too harsh for your skin.

Are Multitasking Products The End Of Skin Cycling?

Does the rise in convenient multitasking products spell the end of the skin cycling routine? Honestly, we’re probably not about to see the end of it soon. However, the current love for multitasking, results-driven, hard-working products is why we’re willing to spend big all while saving time and energy.

Can The Way Skincare Products Are Mixed Change?

lancome Rénergie C.R.x. Triple Serum Retinol

If like us, you never thought you’d see the day when previously uncombined ingredients would be mixed into a non-irritating, skin-benefiting formula, then we’ve got some exciting news for you. Lancôme’s latest launch, Rénergie C.R.x. Triple Serum Retinol ($244 at Myer) is throwing out the preconceived rulebook and sees for the first time retinol combined with vitamin C. The revolutionary formula comes as a total multitasking game changer for your skin. It also shows Lancôme’s leading innovative abilities to be able to blend safely previously unthought-of ingredients together.

The serum is dispensed from three separate chambers, only mixing once applied to your skin to give you rejuvenating retinol results, combined with the brightening effects of vitamin C, along with an extra treat of hydrating, skin-supporting x-peptides added to the mix.
