Read This Before Your Next Hair Appointment

It's more important than you'd think

Come prepared

If you want a successful haircut, it pays to be organised. Here are five things to do before you even dial your hairdresserโ€™s phone number.

Know your texture

โ€œConsider texture first, even before you consider face shape,โ€ says Shane Henning, creative director at Noddys on King in Sydney and global master for Goldwell. โ€œIf you choose a hairstyle that works with your hair texture, you wonโ€™t have any problems styling it.โ€

Consider your lifestyle

If you have 30 seconds to style your hair in the morning but your new cut takes 30 minutes to prep, youโ€™ll wind up disappointed. So be honest in the salon chair. โ€œHave a really thorough lifestyle consultation with your hairdresser,โ€ advises Richard Kavanagh, celebrity stylist and creative director for ghd. โ€œWe need to understand you as a person.โ€

Come psyched

Impulse haircutting can bring about post-appointment angst so make sure you think the process over. โ€œYou need to be mentally prepared for the change,โ€ says Henning.

Be prepared to listen

If your colourist says no, itโ€™s probably for your (and your hairโ€™s) benefit. โ€œListen to your hairdresser, not social media,โ€ says Justin Pace, colour expert at Papas + Pace and global artist for Redken. โ€œSometimes itโ€™s impossible to achieve a requested outcome.โ€

Bring images

If thereโ€™s a celeb whose hair you covet, โ€œbring your hairdresser pictures of shapes that you like,โ€ says Joey Scandizzo, celebrity stylist and co-founder of Eleven Australia. โ€œItโ€™s good to have reference.
