This Is What To Expect From CAMILLA’s MBFWA Closing Show

From the head designer herself

The end of MBFWA is fast approaching and with it, the highly-anticipated closing show by CAMILLA.

Ahead of seeing the collection firsthand, we spoke to Head Designer, Jenna Redfern, about what to expect from the first ready-to-wear collection by the iconic Australian label.

You’re always inspired by different and exotic destination and cultures – what drew you to Japan for this collection?

I think the more exotic and mysterious a place is, the more it calls to us. Camilla and I have always been fascinated by Japan and we have flirted for years about the idea of designing a collection inspired by its fusion of ancient traditions and modernism. We love getting to explore and uncover a new place together, learning all its secrets along the way… And Japan was a really exciting place to find our next collection inspiration.

You’re also known for immersing yourself in every culture you decide to spotlight – how long were you in Japan and what’s your best memory from the trip?
We were in Japan for three weeks and got to see some incredible things. I found the Geisha of Gion totally fascinating – almost like a step back in time.

What do you admire most about Japanese fashion?
The Japanese have a very recognisable look – from Kawakubo to Kenzo to Miyake… it’s undeniable when you see it and I love how unique and bold their style is.

I’m sure it’s hard to choose, but what are your top 3 favourite pieces from this collection and why?
It’s always hard to choose a favourite from each collection, but I am obsessed with the silk jogger pants and matching bomber jacket, the embellished flared trousers and the black jacquard pieces which truly showcase an artisan handwriting.

This collection marks a slight departure for Camilla – tell us about that and what can fans of the brand expect?
This is our first truly ready-to-wear collection, which has catered to our customers in both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. Core to the brand’s DNA are prints and embellishments, as well as a true appreciation of textiles, fabrics and artisanal craft. You may not instantly recognise everything coming down the runway at our Resort ’19 show as CAMILLA, but look closely and you’ll see our DNA in these new styles. For some time now, we have been playing with structured garments, suiting, as well as sports luxe and modern loungewear. We can’t wait to show the evolution of the brand at MBFWA.

You have a ‘Camilla army’, as we call them at marie mlaire – total diehard fans who live, breathe and love your designs. What is it about Camilla that appeals to this passionate, thriving fanbase?

We like to think of them as part of our Tribe than an army, but it’s nice to know that they’re perceived as warrior women! I think our customers feel a deep sense of connection to everything we stand for – travel, adventure, unity and girl power.

Where to next?

Late last year Camilla and I immersed ourselves in France’s beautiful culture. We wandered Paris’ cobbled streets, discovered hidden corners in Monet’s garden and revelled in the romanticism of this country. We can’t wait to share the resulting ready-to-wear collection with the world.
