For those who have surrendered themselves to the bright and shining lights of Tinseltown, the quest for love can feel like an indescribable whirlwind. It’s easy to assume our favourite A-list couples lead lives that emulate that of a fairytale however such fictional plots almost never mirror the trajectories of real-life romances – even in Hollywood. Fuelled by the tumultuous vortex that is social media, it’s impossible not to get caught up and become emotionally invested in the adorable romances of our favourite stars (we’re looking at you, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth). While there’s no denying the challenge that relationships pose, such challenge can be augmented when confronted with navigating fame, fortune, herds of paparazzi and intense public scrutiny.
Below, we’ve recounted the high-profile celebrity couples who will make you believe in love all over again whilst proving that the second (or maybe even the third) time’s a charm.
1. Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry
Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry first sparked relationship rumours in 2016 after they were spotted together at the Weinstein Company/Netflix Golden Globes after party. Later that year, the pair were photographed in Italy enjoying a romantic getaway where Orlando stripped naked before getting into the water with his girlfriend. Anyone else remember that? Less than 12 months later, the couple released a combined statement confirming their split. “Before rumours or falsifications get out of hand we can confirm that Orlando and Katy are taking respectful, loving space at this time”.
Now it appears they have rekindled their romance, being spotted together numerous times in past months. During the finale of American Idol, the 33-year-old pop singer announced she was off the market, saying “I’m not single but I still like you”.
2. Brooklyn Beckham and Chloe Grace Moretz
For a long time, we were suspicious of Brooklyn Beckham and Chloe Grace Moretz’s relationship. Were they or weren’t they? In 2014 Brooklyn broke our hearts when he was spotted out on a ski date with the blonde beauty in Santa Monica California. After more two years of speculation, Chloe confirmed their romance during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, however, months later the couple had called it quits. In October last year, the KickAss actress posted a cute pic of her and Brooklyn leading us to believe that they were giving love another try, before Brooklyn was spotted kissing a brunette. We can’t keep up.
3. Prince William and Kate Middleton
It wasn’t always royal crowns and public appearances for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The couple first went public with their relationship in 2004 during a ski vacation, however, they went their separate ways in April 2007. Their breakup was short lived as they reconciled three short months later. Fast forward four years and the royal duo were married in a lavish ceremony in Westminster Abbey in 2011.
4. Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez
It’s safe to say that it’s been a long road for the Biebs and the former Disney Channel actress. Seven years and multiple breakups in between. In 2011 the couple made their debut red carpet appearance as a couple at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. In 2012, they briefly split yet reconciled shortly after. In 2014, it appeared that the couple had decided to give their relationship yet another chance as the ‘Friends’ singer confirmed he was still with his girlfriend. The on again off again couple confirmed they were on again (after Gomez’s 10 month relationship with the Weeknd had ended) after being spotted on multiple outings together.
5. Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel
Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel seem to have one of the most solid marriages in Hollywood although it wasn’t always that way. The golden couple began dating in 2007 after they were introduced by a mutual friend at the Golden Globes. Biel admitted to marie claire that she had her reservations about the pop singer in the beginning, “I was thinking to myself ‘What are you doing you’re going to get your heart broken’. Are you nuts?” In 2011 the duo ended their four-year romance, however, sources close to the couple claimed that they remained on amicable terms. In January 2012, Timberlake and Biel got engaged and then tied the knot 9 months later in Italy. The couple became parents in 2015 after Jessica gave birth to their first son Silas Randall Timberlake.
6. Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid
Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid are one of Hollywood’s most talked about couples since they began dating in 2015. The former One Direction singer and the supermodel were spotted holding hands while leaving a late night spot in Los Angeles, confirming their relationship status. After attending the 2016 Met Gala together reports had circulated that the couple had split. Days later Gigi put an end to any rumours telling ELLE that she likes to “hang out with my boyfriend” during her nights in. The two then confirmed they were back on by holding hands in New York City later that month. In March this year, both Malik and Hadid released a statement on social media announcing their split. Two months later they were photographed kissing in public giving a clear indication that their romance had been rekindled.
7. Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo
In 2012, Maroon 5 hottie Adam Levine was caught kissing Victoria’s Secret model Behati Prinsloo during a romantic getaway in Hawaii, hinting that he had moved on from former girlfriend Anne Vyalitsyna (Who is also a VS Model). In October, the couple made their first public appearance at the GQ Gentlemen’s Ball in NYC. In 2013 Adam broke things off with Behati and briefly dated another Victoria’s Secret Angel, Nina Agdal. In July 2014, the couple reunited (while breaking many hearts in the process) and wed in Los Cabos, Mexico.
8. Ansel Elgort and Violetta Komyshan
This adorable duo go way back to their high school days. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Violetta revealed that she met The Fault In Our Star actor while they were in their freshman year. “I was with my friend, and he was walking down the block. I didn’t even know he went to my school — I just thought he was really attractive. I looked at him and told my friend, ‘Oh my God, that guy’s so hot,’ and she’s like, ‘Oh that’s Ansel, he goes to LaGuardia.'” In 2014, Us Weekly reported that the couple ended their relationship due to Elgort’s “hectic schedule”. That wasn’t the end for the high school lovers as in January 2015, Us Weekly reported that the couple were officially back together once more.
9. The Weeknd and Bella Hadid
The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesafye) and Bella became friends in 2015 after hanging out at Coachella where he performed. After more than a year of dating, the couple decided to go their separate ways in November 2016. While neither Tesafye or Hadid have confirmed the cause of their breakup, it alleged that their hectic schedules were the cause of the split. They recently fuelled speculation of rekindling their romance after they were spotted at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month.
10. Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus
Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus are pretty much the definition of couple goals. The pair were cast opposite each other in The Last Song and it was the beginning of a beautiful romance (with lots of breaks ups and makeups). In January 2010, the couple went public with their romance, only to split later in August that year. A month after getting back together, they had called it quits again. In 2011, the 25-year-old pop singer and her beau were back on again and got engaged the following year. Then in September 2013, the couple called off their engagement. Soon after Liam crushed our hopes of a reconciliation after he was spotted kissing actress Ella Gonzalez. Fans went crazy after Cyrus was seen wearing the engagement that Hemsworth had given to her. Alas, the couple announced they were engaged once more in January 2016.
11. Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin
Bieber and Baldwin first sparked rumours rumors in 2014, but they both denied the romance. However, in early 2016, Bieber posted a viral photo kissing Baldwin and numerous loved-up Instagrams followed. A month after that, Baldwin said she and Justin were not exclusive. Now, two years later (and following Bieber’s split with on-off again flame, Selena Gomez), the pair have been spotted spending a lot of time together: first, a weekend away in Florida (where Baldwin was pictured running her hands through Bieber’s hair), then they went to church together (where Bieber was pictured with his arm around Baldwin) and now, they’ve been spotted out and about in NYC. Is this the real thing? Only time will tell.
