The Decades Biggest Fashion Trends Have Been Revealed

The fashion world has seen it all - by Elyssa Kostopouloa
  • 17 Dec 2019

Ten years is a long time as far as fashion goes. Trends come and go (and come back again), brands welcome new creative directors and as always, celebrities lead the way and inspired their loyal fans to follow suit.

Watch below: Rihanna's red carpet style evolution

With endless products, so many brands and way too many Instagram accounts to follow, how do we really know which items reigned supreme? Lyst’s “2010s: A Decade in Fashion” report has done the hard work for us – using social media mentions, fashion articles, global fashion searches and sales data to determine exactly how and what we shopped during the 2010s.

Have you got any of these pieces hiding in your wardrobe? And are they still in use or just a memento of trends gone by? Keep scrolling to find out.

2010:

It’s hard to forget Alexander McQueen’s iconic skull print scarf. It was often seen draped around the necks of your favourite celebrities, tied ono the handles of the hottest designer handbags and was available in more colours than we could count. The scarf was so popular in fact, that sales for the print scarf increased by 1400% in the days following the designer’s premature death in 2010.

2011:

A staple in almost every fashion girls’ closet, the Valentino Rockstud shoe debuted in the brand’s SS11 collection and quickly became one of the most sought-after shoes. In 2015, it was reported that the company’s revenue had doubled since their inception, and the Rockstud (and its many incarnations) are still a favourite today.

2012:

Rihanna’s fashion evolution truly began in 2012. The performer began experimenting with fashion – both on and off the red carpet – and was never afraid to take a risk. It’s no wonder that she quickly became one of the most talked-about fashion influencers in the industry.

2013:

Full and bold brows were in and this trend was largely thanks to the Queen of eyebrows, Cara Delevingne. In 2013, Google announced that the search term ‘tweezers’ had dropped significantly in the last year, while searches for the model had increased.

2014:

Did Kendall Jenner create the insta-model? Her memorable walk for Marc Jacobs at his Fall 2014 show in New York earned her the big break that launched her career. In the same year, she was named by Time Magazine, alongside her sister Kylie, as one of the most influential teenagers of the year.

2015:

Alessandro Michele’s new vision for Gucci took flight with the release of the Gucci Princetown fur loafer. Although it confused many, it was loved by many more and quickly became one of the year’s most versatile pieces.

2016:

For those of us who remember Vetements $360 DHL t-shirt (let’s face it how can you forget something so polarising), you’ll also recall the way it divided the fashion world and its harshest critics. Despite the criticism around it, the t-shirts initial hype quickly became hysteria and before we knew it, had sold out worldwide.

2017:

Dior’s “We Should All be feminists” t-shirt hit the runway at the brand’s Fall 2016 show and its success only rose from there. Slogan t-shirts increased 105% year on year, and with celebrities like Rihanna and Natalie Portman sporting Dior’s famous t-shirt, it’s no secret as to why it’s been recognised as the most wanted item of 2017.

2018:

Love it or hate it, there’s no way to avoid the fact that the ‘ugly dad’ shoe was the most talked about sneaker style of the year. Unquestionably, Balenciaga’s Triple S was at the helm of the trend, driving thousands of Instagram searches and setting the fashion agenda for months after its release.

2019:

Bottega Veneta was named the breakout brand of the year for 2019 and it’s easy to see why. Their ‘Pouch’ bag could be seen carried by the world’s leading fashionistas and their Stretch sandals spiked 53% on Lyst year on year.
