Celine Song’s long-awaited sophomore release, Materialists, is finally here, and there’s much to say about its refreshing exploration of modern love – and of course its perfect cast. However, for the purpose of this (very important) feature, we’ll be focusing on Dakota Johnson, or rather her character Lucy, and the Materialists outfits our team haven’t stopped talking about.
It’s no secret that Dakota Johnson is a style muse in her own right, so it’s only fitting that her character’s looks would feel equally as covetable and it seems the wardrobe department got the memo.
Before the film even hit cinemas, we were served a steady stream of on-set outfit inspo courtesy of Johnson’s regular appearances on the streets of New York. From floaty floral dresses paired with sneakers to that strapless blue number, the veritable feast of notable sartorial moments had us hooked from the get-go and the film itself only added to our fixation.
Whether you’ve been part of the Dakota Johnson fan club since the start, or signed up since discovering her Materialists outfits, we’ve got you sorted. We tracked down every piece from her Materialists wardrobe so you, too, can live out your Pedro Pascal/Chris Evans throuple dreams – dressed accordingly.
Where To Shop Dakota Johnson’s Materialists Outfits
The Strapless Blue Dress

One of the most memorable Materialists looks belongs to this striking blue Proenza Schouler Odette dress. Matchmaker Lucy opts for the statement silhouette, paired with Bottega Veneta Knot sandals and a Cascade Oval Hinge Collar necklace from Meuchner, as her wedding guest outfit of choice.
Without revealing any spoilers (it’s in the trailer), it’s also the dress Lucy is wearing when she first meets Pedro Pascal’s character, Harry.

The Jeans & A Classic White Shirt Look

These Zara jeans are an immediate yes from us with the light blue denim wash and high rise, wide-leg cut, but matched with a loose white shirt and navy sneakers? Perfection.
The Voile button-down shirt worn by Lucy in Materialists is from Treasure Bond, and the jeans are an old Zara style, but we’ve found some pretty good alternatives (if we do say so ourselves) to recreate the look, below.
The Office Look

One of the opening shots of the film shows a strutting across New York on her way to work wearing the power suit of our dreams.
She pairs an Aritzia Wilfred Generation dark navy pinstripe blazer with a wider pinstripe mini skirt. The white silk blouse and and Paris Texas Anja boots give the corporate-chic outfit an edgier look, while the Hereu Calellia bag (worn by Lucy throughout the film) is a staple we’ll be adding to our capsule wardrobe asap.
The Floaty Floral Dress

If Lucy was going to have a conversation that could alter her future in untold ways, she may as well be doing it in this romantic Dôen Navara dress. Johnson’s character wears the floaty yellow sundress (which is sadly no longer in production) to gatecrash a wedding – the event so spontaneous that all she has in the car with her is her trusty pair of Nike sneakers.
The partnering shouldn’t would, but perhaps just like Lucy and her on-screen love interest, it’s makes for a perfect match.

The High-Low Park Look

Lucy’s Materialists wardrobe oozes effortless elegance in a way that’s undeniably linked to Johnson’s own knack for nailing an outfit.
In one of the last scenes of the film, Lucy opts for a pair of converse Chuck Taylors as her shoe of choice, partnering the casual sneakers with a Reformation Nadira dress. Although that exact style isn’t available anymore, we’ve tracked down a similar spring-like style.

The Jeans & A Nice Top Look

Lucy’s floaty floral blouse (another discontinued Dôen number, sadly) made a pretty match for her Nili Lotan Joan cropped jeans, turning a casual look into special little something, indeed.

The Low-Key Luxe Look

This has to be one of our favourite Dakota Johnson Materialists outfits. The light blue Zara jeans, vintage Coach leather coat and ribbed white tank from Another Tomorrow prove that an outfit doesn’t have to break the bank to stand out. Of course, the Gucci ambassador wouldn’t want be without a pair of the iconic Horsebit loafers, but if your budget won’t stretch quite that far, there are plenty of other options to choose from.
