Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have reportedly called it quits, with sources revealing the breakup news on June 4, 2025.
After eight years together, their relationship – which included matching tattoos and holidays with ex spouses – has come to an end. Sources close to the couple have reportedly told People that despite the pair’s on and off dating history, “It feels final this time.”
Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin, who were first romantically linked in 2017, were last spotted together enjoying a day out in Malibu on May 16. Before that, Johnson travelled to India in support of the Coldplay singer as he toured.
According to insiders, the couple had been engaged for years, with murmurs of a betrothal first circling the stars in 2020. But far from a red flag that the media claimed their long engagement to be, it seemed to suit ‘The Materialists‘ actor and her touring beau, with sources shutting down earlier breakup rumours in 2024: “Sure, they’ve had issues and taken breaks in the past, but things are great not. They both love their careers. They are balancing things the best they can.”
The celebrity couple were notoriously private, but that didn’t stop Chris Martin’s consciously-uncoupled ex, Gwyneth Paltrow, from sharing gushing posts about Johnson, highlighting just how comfortable their dynamic had been.
While reps for Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin are yet to confirm the breakup news, the headlines come mere days before Celine Song’s long-awaited film The Materialists makes its debut. And while we’re not saying it’s auspicious timing, we’re not, not saying it, either.
We could think of worse ways to grapple with post-breakup realities than reliving the modern romcom fairytale alongside co-stars Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans.
