Since its inception, the Grammys red carpet has always been a place to challenge the sartorial status quo in favour of creating the most jaw-dropping, eye-catching and sometimes, completely outrageous looks of all time. Who could forget Jennifer Lopez’s now-iconic plunging green Versace gown? Or, when Lady Gaga arrived surrounded by a glittering sculptural crown and when Nicki Minaj brought a ‘fake pope’ as her accessory in 2012?
Whether you want to admit it or not, there’s no doubt that these iconic celebrity looks have made the Grammys one of the most anticipated award season red carpets.
In anticipation of the 2025 awards show, below, we’ve brought together some of the most iconic Grammys red carpet outfits of all time for your viewing pleasure.

Jennifer Lopez in Versace (2000)

Nicki Minaj arrived on the red carpet wearing a Versace red cloak outfit. Her date? A guy who is dressed like the pope… Why not?

Rihanna in Dior (2015)
This pink, fluffy Dior dress is what internet memes are made of. The internet went into overdrive seeing Rihanna’s pink dress. However, the singer later took on to Instagram to say that Blue Ivy liked her dress. “She was also fully aware that she was in Dior, and not afraid to let ya know ok,” Rihanna wrote.

Beyonce in Osman Yousefzada (2013)
Beyoncé surprised everyone by opting to wear a jumpsuit instead of long dress. The jumpsuit was made by a young British designer Osman Yousefzada.

Adele in Valentino (2013)
Adele stepped out of her comfort zone by wearing a printed, red Valentino dress. While its different from her usual style of all black outfits, some had mixed opinions saying that the dress resembled floral wallpaper.

Kelly Rowland in Georges Chakra (2013)
The singer was sexy and scandalous wearing a Georges Chakra Couture dress, which featured strategically placed cutouts on her cleavage, thighs and midriff.

Olivia Newton John (1983)
Olivia Newton John wore this pink, princess style dress with a matching choker during the 1983 Grammys, where she won Best Video of the Year for “Physical”.

Destiny’s Child (2001)
Destiny’s Child – with the help of Tina Knowles no less – were the ultimate style trio, never missing a moment to dazzle on the red carpet in matching looks that made us stop.

Katy Perry in Giorgio Armani (2011)
Katy Perry arrived at the 2011 Grammys wearing a custom-made Giorgio Armani evening dress featuring a Swarovski crystal encrusted bustier and an iridescent silk organza ruffled skirt.

M.I.A (2009)
M.I.A was heavily pregnant when she arrived at the Grammys in 2009. M.I.A rocked one of the most comfortable looking maternity dresses seen on the red carpet.

Proof that naked dresses have always been in, Toni Braxton wore this white dress during the 2001 Grammys. Braxton says “I’ve always gone a little risqué with all my other awards [show outfits],” she said of the look. “I decided that before I got married and had babies, I’d wear this.”

Madonna in Givenchy (2016)
Always one to make a red carpet statement, Madonna wore this matador-inspired Givenchy outfit during the 2016 Grammys.

Celine Dion (1993)
Who knew Celine Dion was such an early adopter of the naked dress? Props to the megastar for showing up in a sheer black lace gown that had everyone talking.

Rihanna in Jean Paul Gaultier (2011)
After Rihanna wore this sheer white dress, the CBS sent out a note to all of the artists to “Please avoid bare flesh under curves of the buttocks and buttock crack”. And in response, the looks seen on subsequent red carpets have only celebrated the naked dress more and more.

Nicki Minaj (2011)
In one of her most outrageous red carpet looks , Nicki Minaj wore a wig and a leopard print bodysuit. “This is all my hair,” she joked of her wig. “At night, if I press a certain button, my hair grow up. I press another button, it activates the colour in it.”

Harry Styles (2023)
Dressed to impress in a custom Egonlab x Swarovski jumpsuit, Harry Styles chose to bare it all at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, marking a dramatic – and much appreciated – pivot away from his usual, more modest wardrobe.

If anyone was worthy of the most memorable fashion look at this year’s red carpet, it was Shania. With her sparkling black polka dot Harris Reed suit and flame red hair, she was the picture of personality. “I’m in a very happy place right now,” Twain said in an interview with E! at the time. “I think just coming out of this whole COVID phase makes me feel bubbly and happy and fun.”

Lizzo (2023)
The 65th Annual Grammy Awards were a big year for iconic red carpet moments – Lizzo included. Swathed in a statement coral red Dolce & Gabbana cape layered over an orange bodice with glittering boning, the singer offered a dose of dopamine music’s night of nights.

Cardi B (2019)
Never one to miss an opportunity to serve a major style moment, Cardi B was a literal pearl in archival Mugler Couture from the 1995 collection. Featuring a pearl headpiece with matching jewellery, and belt, the billowing silhouette was made to pose in, and that’s exactly what she did.

Billy Porter (2020)
Billy Porter knows how to create an iconic Grammys red carpet moment, and boy did he deliver with this show-stopping ensemble. Designed by Baja East designer Scott Studenberg, the blue crystal jumpsuit was topped with a diamanté fringe wide-brim hat – custom made by milliner Sarah Sokol – inspired by a Burberry chapeau that Billie Eilish once wore.
