MBFWA has long been a launchpad for emerging Aussie talent, bearing witness to the first showings of some of Australia’s most loved designer's, from Zimmermann to Dion Lee. In it’s 25thyear MBFWA is casting it’s net wider afield to some of the most remote parts of Australia to represent the huge and diverse array of emerging talent. As the success of the textile design movement in remote Indigenous communities continues to garner international attention it has never been more relevant to connect the global fashion community with the makers and designers from the world’s oldest living culture.
“As we celebrate the 25th year of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, it is incredibly exciting to welcome this intersection of emerging and established designers that represent the vibrant and diverse fabric of our country, during this significant moment for Australian fashion,” said Natalie Xenita, Executive Director of IMG’s fashion events group, Asia-Pacific region.
The showcase has grown out of the success of the Country to Couture, a fashion runway event celebrating the marriage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander contemporary fine art and high-end fashion that is held every August as part of the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DAAF) program. Scheduled on Friday the 15thof May at MBFWA’s Head Quarters at Carriageworks, the showcase will bring together collections from five of Australia’s leading First Nations designers.
