With the 2018 Invictus Games a little over a month away, comes the realisation that so too is Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's first official royal tour of Australia - and well it would be an understatement to say we're excited.

Which means it might be time to figure out what exactly is, The Invictus Games, so we're in the know when the royals touch down.

What are The Invictus Games?

The Invictus Games is a multi-sport event for wounded, injured and ill servicemen and women. The games, founded by Prince Harry after he attended the 2013 Warrior Games in the United States, one year later he launched the inaugural Invictus Games in London.

The name Invictus comes from the Latin word, which means "unconquered".

The games were held again in 2016 in Orlando, Florida and 2017 in Toronto.

Athletes compete in Athletics, Archery, Driving challenge, Indoor rowing, Powerlifting, Road cycling/Road para-cycling, Swimming, Sitting volleyball, Wheelchair basketball, Wheelchair rugby and this year will see a new addition with sailing added to the program.

What dates are 2018 The Invictus Games on?

The 2018 Invictus Games are to be held in Sydney from October 20-27and will include an opening and closing ceremony.

#MotivationMonday "The Invictus Games is not about winning medals, it's about participating," says #IG2018 Ambassador @CurtMcGrath. "The rewards that come from competing are physical, mental, and emotional." McGrath, a former combat engineer, was injured after stepping on an IED while serving in Afghanistan. Just six years on, he's a world champion, a gold-medal winning Paralympian and #InvictusGames competitor. His advice for others is simple: "Make the most out of every opportunity that is in front of you." Where will the games be held?

Events for the games will be held at numerous locations across Sydney, including Sydney Olympic Park and on and around Sydney Harbour.

Which countries compete?

There will be over 500 athletes competing from 18 nations competing in this year's games, including Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdon, Canada, United States, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Afghanistan, Estonia, Georgia, Iraq, Jordan, Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Ukraine.

Which famous faces are attending?

While the obvious drawcard is Prince Harry obviously, his wife Meghan Markle will also be joining him, as part of the couple's first official royal tour following their wedding in May this year.

But Meghan and Harry aren't the only famous faces you're likely to spot in Sydney during the games.

David Beckham is confirmed to be joining the Duke and Duchess when they're Down Under, after signing up as an ambassador for the Invictus Games.

David Beckham explained that he was ‘incredibly proud’ to take up the role, and we’re sure Harry and Meghan will be thrilled to spend some time with their friend too, with the Beckhams attending Harry and Meghan’s wedding earlier this year. Here's hoping he brings Victoria and the kids too!

I've been lucky enough to meet and work with many serving, veteran and wounded British armed forces personnel over the years and I've been humbled by the courage, resilience and spirit shown by each and every one of them. So, I'm incredibly proud to announce I will be an Ambassador for this year's Invictus Games in Sydney. The entire Invictus Games team, led by the Duke of Sussex, has achieved remarkable things in such a short space of time, using sport as a powerful force to rehabilitate and unite and I can't wait to be part of the energy and the excellence of the Games this year. @invictusgames2018 #IG2018

But the A-list excitement doesn't end there.

Australia's very-own royal, Princess Mary, has also been confirmed to be attending and will be joined by husband, Crown Prince Frederik.

How can I attend?

Tickets are available now from the official Invictus Games website, and you'll be able to catch all the action on the ABC as the official broadcaster of the games.
